Sight + Sound of the Day

The song itself, to my ears, is blah... unimpressive. Rather standard r&b fare. But the love between this father/daughter duo leaps from the screen, courses through their voices, permeates their surrounding. Makes me smile. I remember photos of her from when she was a young child, and then a (younger) teen, and thinking she was... awkward. She's beautiful now, has a lovely voice and what seems to be a great spirit. But I have a weakness for Daddy's Girl types. There's just something glimmering about a woman who has grown up confident in her father's love for her. (I guess it also helps that I ain't really fucking with 'em on any level but friendship, so I don't have to deal with any possible dark-sided fallout from that particular love dynamic.)
I have to thank Daphne Brooks and Winston Emano for their recent contributions to the fund-raising campaign for the new computer, and for understanding that this recent flurry of work activity ain't really generating ducats like that. The new total of funds raised so far just creeped over the $1,500 mark. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed.

Oh, yeah... I'm doing a feature on the Hollywood Bowl for Flaunt magazine that won't run till later this year, but I've been going to some amazing concerts the past few weeks, seeing a huge array of artists: Gnarls Barkley, Feist, Diana Ross, Paulo Nutini, Solomon Burke, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and more. Last night I saw the great, legendary Etta James and came away boundlessly inspired. She was raunchy as fuck (crotch-grabbing, simulating hand-jobs and fellatio -- Granny, NO!) but she was also the very essence of true soul singing. She kilt it. I'll post up excerpts from all those reviews very soon.
